our top picks

a breath of life - Clarice Lispector

2 sentence summary: The "author" of the book (the person who seems to be writing) creates a character named Angela. Throughout the book you can watch him fall in love and go mad within his own creation.

rating:9/10

why: it can be a little bit confusing, and before you know it he's already gone insane, and you missed the best part.

fav part: the short essay about jewels! absolutely genius.

tuesdays with morrie - Mitch Albom

2 sentence summary: Morrie is told that he will die soon, so he spends his last moments teaching one of his old students life lessons, and helps him through all the suffering he seems to be enduring.

rating:9.5/10

why: one of my favourite books, the only reason i gave it a 9.5 is because it gets a little bit repetitive

fav part: when he talked about accepting death

the giver - Lois Lowry

2 sentence summary: Dystopian novel where everything being the same is prioritised, lacks any colour emotion or choice. follows a 12 year old who notices the flaws in the system and realises that to have joy you must experience pain.

rating:9/10

why: it's such a unique way on viewing life, and though we think about it every day I think a lot of people would choose to give up pain without realising what it might do to your joy.

fav part: the final bit when we see the memories of happiness but also the war.

Plato:A short intro - Julia Annas

2 sentence summary: Helps you get into who plato was without overcomplicating anything;strictly the facts. Goes through his life and who he was while also talking about his philosophies and the relation of him, Socrates, and Aristotle

rating:8/10

why: it's super helpful on describing who he was and making sense on his thoughts, the only issue is it makes you want to put this book down and go discover his works.

fav part: the opening jury idea.
